Professor Tonya Kuhl - from UC Davis - a conscientious and enthusiastic teacher!

It’s a second course Prof. Tonya works with Advanced Program K6. In this course – ECH155A, they do experiments about viscosity and permeability. In viscosity experiment, they use a setting sphere viscometer to determine the viscosity of two viscous liquids at room temperature, determine a relationship between the coefficient of drag and the Reynolds number. The key engineering question in permeability experiment is: how long will it take for the water to drain completely? By studying the drainage of a liquid through porous media of different permeabilities students can develop constitutive models through scaling analysis; demonstrate the effect of porosity/permeability on draining dynamics and determine the reproducibility of the data. Fluid flow in porous media is crucial to understand as it applies to recovery of crude oil from oil fields. Besides that, Prof. Tonya shows students in CTTT K6 how to develop good experimental methods, experience in modeling data, analyze data, non-dimensionalizing models, error analysis and basic report writing.
